Summer Burgess is leaving a mark at MTSU for her last year on the softball field. She became the all-time hits leader for MTSU after her 224th hit against Mercer on March 21.
“I was like oh my gosh I finally did it. I was just really excited” said Burgess. “When I was standing on first and looking back at my teammates in the dugout and they were all cheering for me. I was just like I did it.”
Burgess has played 25 games this season with a batting average of .313.
“I personally think what has allowed summer to be as successful as she has been is, she hates losing more than she loves winning,” said hitting coach Chelsea Hawkins. “She definitely just has that competitive edge.”
Hawkins has worked with Burgess for three years. One challenge she has faced is learning the most effective way to teach Burgess while incorporating her strengths and weaknesses.
"I had to realize, how do I coach summer when she’s not a technical or physical person,” said Hawkins. “So usually if she’s having a bad day, it’s not really physical it’s more of her approach or her mental game.”
Next up for the Blue Raiders is a road matchup at Murray State later today at 4 p.m.
