MTSU Archaeology students are getting first hand experience onsite at one of Nashville’s first post-Civil War African American neighborhoods.

Professor Andrew Wyatt of the MTSU Sociology and Anthropology department is leading a project on the Bass Street Community in Nashville.

Students on this project learn fieldwork basics for archeological digs while also helping to be a hand in preserving black history.

Bass Street is located at the foot of Fort Negley, known to be a stronghold of the Union Army during the Civil War, built by hundreds of free and enslaved African Americans. Following the conclusion of the war, the area developed into a thriving community that eventually was demolished.

MTSU students have uncovered items from the neighborhood, including dinnerware, household items, bricks, window glass and other construction items.

The artifacts found by students will be displayed in the Fort Negley Visitors Center.
