A bill filed last week in the Tennessee General Assembly proposes the school board be
required to provide all Tennessee students with free breakfast and lunch.

Republican Senator Bobby Harshbanger, of Hawkins and Sullivan Counties, sponsored SB 0740 with the initiative of requiring the state to provide funding to schools to ensure students had free breakfast and lunch.
The bill states, “As introduced, it requires local boards of education to establish a program to provide free school breakfast and lunch to all students.”
If the bill is amended, House Bill 2157 would also be amended. This bill deals with funding for
education resources including the Tennessee Hope Scholarship and the Tennessee Lottery
Scholarship.
